Influence of surface tension on the stability of edge dislocations in smectic A liquid crystals

چکیده
The general solution describing an edge dislocation inside a smectic A film is presented. Its elastic interaction energy with the limiting surfaces is calculated by taking into account ngorously the surface tension y This formula is used to discuss the dislocation stability with respect to a slip motion towards the surface If surface tension prevails over smectic A elasticity, charactenzed by elastic constants K and B, i e if y ~ (KB )"~, then the dislocation is stabilized within the film If, by contrast, the surface tension is small (y ~ (KB)"~), the dislocation is attracted to the surface of the film

Edge dislocations in copolymer lamellar films
Thin films of symmetric diblock copolymers on a flat solid surface form lamellae parallel to the substrate. The uppermost layer of the film may be incomplete and made of domains with a thickness equal to the lamellar period L. We investigate these domains both theoretically and experimentally. The domain edge is associated with a dislocation in the lamellar order which has been observed by tran...
متن کاملSurface depinning of smectic-A edge dislocations.
Using a Landau-de Gennes approach, we model the formation of an edge dislocation in a smectic-A cell initially in the bookshelf structure. The driving force is the mismatch between the layer thickness in a bulk smectic-A liquid crystal and that imposed by confining plates. The core structure of the dislocation is calculated taking into account spatial variations of the smectic translational ord...
متن کاملDefects in Liquid Crystals: Surface and Interfacial Anchoring Effects
This review discusses static properties of topological defects, such as line defectsdisclinations and dislocations, point defects hedgehogs (monopoles) and boojums; focal conic domains and tilt grain boundaries in basic types of liquid crystals: uniaxial and biaxial nematics, cholesterics and smectics. We present the most popular experimental techniques to study defects in soft matter, namely, ...
متن کاملCurvature and topology in smectic-A liquid crystals
Considerations of rotational invariance in one-dimensionally modulated systems such as smectics-A, necessitate nonlinearities in the free energy. The presence of these nonlinearities is critical for determining the layer configurations around defects. We generalize our recent construction for finding exact minima of an approximate nonlinear free energy to the full, rotationally invariant smecti...
متن کاملModeling the Surface Tension and the Interface of Ten Selected Liquid Mixtures: Correlation, Prediction, and the Influence of Using Partial Molar Volume
This work investigates the modeling of the surface tension and the interface of liquid mixtures. Nine binary liquid mixtures of (DMSO+alcohols), (2-Propanol+2,2,4-trimethylpentane), (Tetrahydrofuran+2-Propanol), (Tetrahydrofuran+2,2,4-trimethylpentane), and (ethano+glycerol) are considered. Additionally, one ternary liquid mixture of (Tetrahydrofuran+2-Propanol+2,2,4-trimethylpenta...
